Linkin Park, Metallica and Twenty One Pilots are among the top-selling rock artists of 2017, according to Nielsen Music's year-end report. The three acts stood tall in a period that showed a further decline for rock music overall, with R&B/hip-hop becoming the most dominant genre in the U.S.

One More Light, maintains their unbroken run of top five entries but fails to become their 4th number one, debuting at No.4 on sales of 16,078 copies. Its immediate predecessor,The Hunting Party, debuted and peaked at No.2 on sales of 24,795 copies a little under three years ago. And exactly three years before that Living Things debuted at number one on sales of 41,526 copies. The band's highest first week sales, of 94,501, came in 2007 from third studio album, Minutes To Midnight. One More Light's opening week tally is the lowest since their debut Hybrid Theory sold 238 copies on its release in 2000. It took Hybrid Theory nine weeks to make the Top 200, 12 weeks to make the Top 40, 25 weeks to make the Top 10, and 50 weeks to reach its peak position of number four. Hybrid Theory is by far Linkin Park's biggest seller, with a to-date tally of 1,585,812, including the 948 copies it sold to jump 149-121 this week. (mediatraffic.de).

Linkin Park Leaps to No. 1 on Billboard Artist 100 (www.billboard)

The group rules the chart for the first time, and is the first rock act to reign in 2017, fueled by its new No. 1 album.
Linkin Park vaults 50-1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated June 10) to become the top musical act in the U.S. for the first time. The band is the first rock act to top the chart since Bon Jovi led the tally for a week in November.
The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
Linkin Park rules the chart thanks largely to its new LP, One More Light, which debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 111,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending May 25, according to Nielsen Music. The set arrives as the band's sixth No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Album sales contribute the majority of Artist 100 points (88 percent) for Linkin Park, which previously peaked at No. 49 on the chart in 2014.

Linkin Park notches its sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as One More Light debuts atop the tally. The set earned 111,000 equivalent album units in the week ending May 25, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 100,000 were in traditional album sales. The album is Linkin Park’s seventh studio effort, and was released on May 25 through Machine Shop/Warner Bros. Records.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new June 10, 2017-dated chart (where Linkin Park bows at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Wednesday, May 31 -- one day later than usual, due to the Memorial Day holiday in the U.S.

Earlier in the week, industry forecasters suggested that Linkin Park would start at No. 2 on the chart, with perhaps 90,000 units (with around 80,000 of that sum in album sales). However, the set sold stronger than expected, and it comes out on top.

Topping the chart for the sixth time, Linkin Park joins a small group of rock bands that have done the same. Just nine rock bands in total have scored at least six No. 1 albums: The Beatles (with 19), The Rolling Stones (nine), Led Zeppelin and U2 (both with seven), and Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band, Eagles, Linkin Park and Metallica (all with six each).

One More Light is Linkin Park’s tenth top 10 album. The band previously visited the top 10 with all six of their earlier studio efforts, along with two remix albums, and the band’s collaborative mash-up set with Jay Z, Collision Course.

Linkin Park started incredibly strong with back-to-back smash albums Hybrid Theory and Meteora. It seems they have been slowly but surely losing ground ever since, what we will be able to verify today. It is no secret their last 2014 album The Hunting Party bombed, question is then how is their back catalog going today despite the more difficult times the band is facing?
As a reminder for users who are not yet familiar with the CSPC idea you do not need to worry, it is quite simple as it only consists in merging every format sales an artist has been getting and attributing them to respective studio albums. We will start by focusing on raw data, setting how much each album sold. Then, we will check sales of each track from those albums on each format – physical, digital and streaming – and weight them to value those figures on a par with album sales. To complete the study, we will study sales of the all compilations, live albums and music videos they dropped. Once all the raw data is set, we will only need to apply appropriate weighting to get the overall picture of Linkin Park career results.

With their three 00s albums moving a combined 41 million units, there is no wonder why Linkin Park was one of the biggest acts of the decade. Although sales decreased album after album, those albums, Minutes To Midnight included, were among the very top selling albums of their respective years. In fact, with Hybrid Theory #1 of 2001, Meteora #3 of 2003 and Minutes To Midnight at #6 they all easily made the Global Top 10 of the year as published by the IFPI.
Times got harder from the 10s still. The band last three albums sold a combined 6,45 million, more than 6 times less than their predecessors. If the market notably decreased in the meantime, that doesn’t fully explain such a difference. Worst, their sales never rebounded. Except Living Things, all albums sold 65% or less of its immediate predecessor. A Thousand Suns was the most abrupt fall, selling barely 35% of Minutes To Minutes. In the other side, selling 1,25 million in 2014 is not that bad so while the band profile undoubtedly decreased, they are still a relevant act.
